Hospital Bag Checklist for Mom – What to Pack Before Labor

Hey, fellow mom-to-be! I’m packing my bag right now at 36 weeks, and let me tell you—starting early is a game-changer. This checklist is my sanity-saver, with varied details because life isn't uniform. Some items are no-brainers (just pack 'em!), others come with my "do this now" nudges. Pack by category, label bags, and test everything. You're not just packing; you're claiming your power for the big day.

Hospital Bag Checklist for Mom – What to Pack Before Labor
  • 1.

    • 1.1.
Gather all your necessary documents right now (ID, insurance card, birth plan, prenatal records, and hospital forms) and put them in a clear, accessible file. Keep this folder immediately next to your car keys.
    • 1.2.
You'll be spending a lot of time on your phone (timing contractions, taking photos, updating family). Make sure your cable is at least 6-10 feet long so you can reach the hospital wall outlet from your bed.
    • 1.3.
Choose footwear that requires absolutely zero bending or struggling. Slides or flip-flops are perfect for quick trips to the bathroom or walking the halls during labor.
  • 2.

    • 2.1.
Ditch the thin, ill-fitting hospital gown! Pack your own dark-colored or patterned gown that has easy access for monitoring and breastfeeding. You deserve to feel a little bit human and covered.
    • 2.2.
Labor is intense, and the last thing you want is hair sticking to a sweaty face. Secure your hair before things get serious—you won't regret it.
    • 2.3.
Include things like a massage tool, a playlist of calming or motivating music, lip balm (hospitals are dry!), and maybe even a small essential oil diffuser to create a more soothing environment.
    • 2.4.
Fuel your support person! They won't be fed by the hospital, so pack plenty of non-perishable, energy-boosting snacks (granola bars, dried fruit, nuts) and a reusable water bottle.
  • 3.

    • 3.1.
Treat yourself to a nice, soft robe and two sets of loose-fitting pajamas. Ensure they button or pull down easily for nursing. Dark colors will help hide any inevitable postpartum leaks or stains.
    • 3.2.
Buy several pairs of large, disposable or dark-colored cotton underwear that sit comfortably above the C-section incision line (even if you plan a vaginal birth, they're better with massive pads). Prioritize comfort and coverage.
    • 3.3.
Don't rely on institutional soap! Pack your own luxurious body wash, lotion, and face wipes. A quick wash with familiar scents is a powerful mood booster. Also, bring a light makeup kit for post-birth photos.
  • 4.

    • 4.1.
Choose two supportive, comfortable nursing bras (or tanks) that you can easily unclip one-handed.
    • 4.2.
Pack a high-quality lanolin or alternative cream—start using it immediately to prevent painful chafing as you both learn to latch.
    • 4.3.
Include a small box of disposable pads to manage early leakage.
  • 5.
Select an outfit that is loose, comfortable, and stretchy, essentially fitting you at about six months pregnant. A maxi dress or loose leggings with a tunic is perfect. Don't forget that outfit for the little one either!
